Sports teachers learn about netball

At the beginning of last year we were approached by a lady named Yael Tal, a sports teacher at the Seminar Hakibbutzim College where new teachers are trained. Originally from South Africa and a former netball player herself, she had assigned to one of her trainees Irit Ephraim – who had never before heard of netball – the task of teaching this wonderful sport to students.

Both ladies came to one of the Ra'anana training sessions where Irit in particular asked lots of questions and they were also given the opportunity of playing. Irit paid a couple of follow-up visits to the Tel Aviv club and then started training girls at Ironi Daled High School in Tel Aviv. Israel Netball lent Irit a ball and two sets of bibs and Lara Krasnostein, a Tel Aviv player, went along a few times to help her out as well. At the end of April, Judy joined them at the students' final sports lesson of the year.

On June 4th at Yael's invitation, Tal, Lara and Judy went to the College to hold two netball sessions for some thirty trainee sports teachers! The young men and women were quite enthusiastic about learning a new sport and participating in the sessions that Tal had prepared. The positive atmosphere was very encouraging and we received a lovely letter from Dr Hadas Dekel and the staff of the Physical Education and Movement Department thanking us for our help and with the hope that our collaboration would continue next year as well!
